Introduction

This report presents the entries and results for all GCSEsubject categories in England, Northern Ireland and Wales for the years 2005 to 2014 (summer exam sessions only). The data is compiled from the Inter-Awarding Body Statistics produced by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ)2. Within each subject category there may be different specifications or indeed different qualifications: for instance, the Combined Science category includes Core Science and Additional Science; the Communication Studies category includes Media Studies, Film Studies and Expressive Arts. Where individual subjects are of special interest, these are presented separately: for instance, the Social Science category has been broken down into Psychology and Sociology only and the Languages category into French, German and Spanish only.

The report starts with the entries and results for all subject categories together, followed by each category (or subject) separately. For each, the data are presented in the following order:

• Entries, overall and by gender

• Grade distribution (all candidates)

• Grade distribution (male candidates)

• Grade distribution (female candidates)

There are two tables for each of the grade distributions: the cumulative percentage of candidates achieving each grade by year and the cumulative number of candidates achieving each grade by year.
